From the Year 7-8 Students at the Dunedin Campus
This term in Science the Dunedin Year 7&8's have been focusing on Space.
We learnt about the order of the planets, gravitational pull on them. i.e., “Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun and it has huge gravity.” We also learnt about the Moon’s phases, and looked at the blood moon eclipse, to learn about the stages the moon goes through. We also learned the timeline of happenings/ (when things were sent to space for safety and experimental purposes) – we learned that a few animals were sent to space in a ten year period – fruit flies, a monkey, a dog.
We then picked a planet to research and found out everything about it. Mrs Campbell, our science teacher, told us to create a brochure to advertise why you should come to our planet. (We imagined that the planets we picked were ours.) This included writing persuasive texts and creating fact files. It was very useful - we practiced writing persuasive texts for the speech competition on Thursday.
We used bright, attractive colours to appeal to our customers, and hooks - i.e. “Come to Uranus – It rains Diamonds!” (We were allowed to make reasons up based on the science we found out about the planet).
Here is an example of one of our brochures.
